In honor of International AAC Month, the TASH Communications Committee, Snoopi Botten, and friends released an AAC advocacy song/video yesterday on YouTube: If I Had a VOCA.

VOCA stands for Voice Output Communication Aid, something that around 600,000 people in the UK need and do not yet have.

To give anyone with a speech disability a way to SAY the same words speaking people say most each day. We are putting high frequency words on PowerPoint slides, with the sound added for each word, to give away and use in fun activities that research how useful and essential these words are. We want to make stories, movies and animations that foster language and literacy acquisition using these words, and reveal the plight of living without them. We want to do presentations, have permanently available virtual demonstrations online, and a website for free downloads and information sharing.

24 Hours Online for International AAC Month

At 5:00 AM this morning we are joining Judy of Everyone Communicates in the USA, and many others around the world for 24 hour AAC Read-a-Thon on Facebook and Skype. We'll be looking at the stories and movies entered to the Many Methods, One Goal: To Communicate collection for International AAC Month http://www.aacawareness.org/ visiting AAC websites and talking about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Become a fan of International AAC Month on Facebook to post there, or use the link to the Skype Public Chat. If you can't join with the link send your Skype contact details to info@aacawareness.org and we'll add you!

Single Sheet Dispay Core Vocab poster

Hoping to put 400+ highest frequency words on a single sheet display so everyone can see and use the whole lot without navigating. Think we can do it with 2 x A4 sheets or 2 1/2 stuck together, which should be acceptable size for manual communication. The words are from language studies of toddlers, preschoolers, adults, elder adults and AAC users, words from Gail Van Tatenhove's communication boards, and UK National Literacy Strategy and Dolch early reading words. More need adding than are on the pics here to make the collection complete. And then some need taking off to make manual communication boards with less words. the pics here were made in PowerPoint and we've started adding the sound for the words. PowerPoint doesn't work very well with too many sounds on one slide though - maybe 200 OK.
